One of the most prolific and most famous composers of his time, Georg Philipp Telemann was a student at the University of Leipzig
. Telemann established a highly successful University Collegium Musicum in Leipzig. In 1721, Telemann was appointed Cantor of the Johanneum in Hamburg and director of music of the major city churches. Telemann lived and worked in Hamburg all his life and was succeeded by the son of J.S. Bach and Telemann’s godson, Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach. In his long career Telemann may be considered a link between the late Baroque and early Classical periods.
