One of the greatest keyboard composers and performers of the 17th Century, Girolamo Frescobaldi was initially sponsored by the duke Alfonso II d'Este of Ferrara. Later in Rome, Frescobaldi enjoyed the generous support of Guido Bentivoglio. In 1607, Frescobaldi’s patron introduced the composer to Brussels that was regarded as the heart of keyboard music in Europe. In 1608, Frescobaldi was appointed organist at St. Peter's in Rome, the position he held for the rest of his life. In addition to serving St. Peter’s, Frescobaldi was an official composer and keyboard player for the Medici family in Florence.
