Friedrich Grutzmacher short biography
One of the outstanding cellists and composers of the 19th Century, Friedrich Grutzmacher was a student of Friedrich Dotzauer. Grutzmacher played his first public concert at the age 8. At age 17, Grutzmacher was appointed concertmaster of the cello section of the Gewandhaus. In 1850, Grutzmacher assumed the position of professor of the Leipzig conservatory. Always enormously successful concert tours took Grutzmacher to Germany, Austria, Italy, England, Holland, Scandinavia, Switzerland and twice to Russia where he performed under the baton of Anton Rubinstein. The great cello virtuoso, Grutzmacher was acclaimed for his impeccable bow technique and musicality.
