One of the leading German composers, Heinrich Schutz studied with Giovanni Gabrieli and Claudio Monteverdi. Schutz joined the court of Landgrave Moritz of Hessen-Kassel and later served the Electors of Saxony in Dresden. Schulz also assumed the position of court composer for the King of Denmark. Schutz wrote mainly music for the church. Schutz’s popular Christmas Oratorio exists in many variants and includes German and Latin versions.
