Described as “Paganini of the clarinet”, Ernesto Cavallini was a noted Italian clarinetist and composer. Ernesto Cavallini studied at the Milan Conservatory. Ernesto Cavallini became the principal clarinetist of La Scala and also served as a professor at the Conservatory. For 15 years, from 1852 to 1867, Ernesto Cavallini performed in St. Petersburg, Russia. Inspired by Ernesto Cavallini’s playing, Verdi composed a clarinet solo and cadenza in his La forza del destino. Influenced by Rossini, Ernesto Cavallini’s best known compositions are Adagio and Tarantella, Adagio Sentimental, Fantasies and 30 Caprices for Clarinet.
