A very important French violinist and composer of the 18th Century, Jean-Marie Leclair studied violin with Somis in Italy. In 1733, Leclair joined the royal service in Paris. All his life Leclair enjoined patronage of Anne, Princess of Orange, and the Duke of Gramont, Leclair’s former student. Leclair wrote many compositions for the theatre that were very popular during his time. Today, Leclair is primarily known for his violin music and methods.
