One of the most outstanding French Baroque composers, François Couperin enjoyed the patronage of Louis XIV. At the age 18, Couperin became the organist of the church of St. Gervais, the position previously occupied by his father and uncle. In 1693 Couperin assumed the position of the royal organist and royal harpsichordist. Described by music critics as ‘poet musician par excellence’, Couperin closely followedthe musical ideas of Corelli. Couperin published over 200 works for harpsichord, all of them loved by J.S. Bach and later by Ravel displayed in his Le Tombeau de Couperin.
