‘The King of Ragtime’, Scott Joplin studied music with a local teacher who taught him piano playing and European art forms. Scott Joplin became known very early, but writing in an established popular style would not satisfy the young composer. Joplin wanted to be a composer of a serious music. He composed 2 operas, a ballet and orchestral music. Joplin’s Maple Leaf Rag became the most popular instrumental rag ever. Today, Joplin’s music is widely performed worldwide and used in many motion pictures.
