A noted French composer Florent Schmitt began his music studies in Nancy and soon became a student of the Paris Conservatoire. Schmitt’s teachers were Dubois, Gedalge, Massenet and Faure. In 1900, Schmitt won the prestigious Prix de Rome with his cantata Sémiramis. Schmitt's wordless drama,La tragédie de Salomé became very popular in France. In 1936, Schmitt was elected Professor of Institute de France, the position that was denied to Igor Stravinsky.
