Dan Decatur Emmett

Emmett short biography
Remembered mainly for Dixie, a song he wrote in 1859, Dan Emmett was a self-taught fiddle player. Emmett began composing using his own tunes at age10. In 1842, a new ensemble Original Virginia Minstrels, was formed: Dan Emmett on the fiddle, Frank Brower on the bones, Billy Whitlock on the banjo, and Dick Pelham on the tambourine. Immediately following their historic performance at the New York’s Bowery Amphitheater, this unique group became enormously popular.
