Rouget de Lisle short biography
A French poet, violinist, singer and composer, Rouget de Lisle wrote Chant de guerre pour l'armie du Rhin that later received the title Marseillaise. The author of the French national anthem, De Lisle spent his life in extreme poverty. Tchaikovsky and Schumann used de Lisle’s theme in their compositions 1812 Overture and Die beiden Grenadiere respectfully.
