Francisco Tarrega

(1852 – 1909)

Francisco Tarrega short biography

Universally hailed as the father of the modern classical guitar, Francisco Tarrega was one of the most influential guitarists ever. Tarrega was a student at the Madrid Conservatory, winning the first prizes in composition and performance. During his triumphal virtuoso career, Tarrega always tried to avoid big concert halls. This may be attributed to Tarrega’s personal guitar technique: Tarrega never performed with nails that would increase the volume. A Parisian critic wrote: ‘Tarrega captured the hearts of everyone'.
