A distinguished French operatic composer, Ambroise Thomas was a student of the Paris Conservatoire. In 1832, Thomas won the prestigious Prix de Rome. Thomas soon assumed a professorship of the Conservatoire and in 1871 was appointed the Conservatoire’s director. Many of Thomas’s 20 operas, Le Caïd, Mignon and Hamlet were the most successful.
