A great Russian pianist and composer, Alexander Scriabin was a contemporary and friend of Rachmaninov. Scriabin’s career as a piano virtuoso was much shorter than that of Rachmaninov. A noted music sponsor and publisher, Belyaev, was so impressed by Scriabin’s early compositions, that he immediately published and distributed them all over Europe. Scriabin's later works were influenced by a metaphysical philosophy that was popular in Russia during the period. Scriabin, like Beethoven before him, believed that music can change the world.
