Considered a rival to Handel, Nicola Porpora assumed his first professional position as Kapellmeister to the Landgrave of Hesse-Darmstadt. In 1733, Porpora went to London where he was supported as the opera composer by the British royals. In 1751, Porpora moved to Vienna where one of his students was Joseph Haydn. Porpora wrote over 50 operas, chamber music works, music for violin, Masses, motets, oratorios and cantatas.
